6 Mistakes to Avoid When Packing for a Move

Packing for a move can be made more difficult than it actually is by making a few rookie mistakes. Staying on track and having everything ready to go for your movers is the goal. Below are six things to avoid to guarantee you make this chore easier and help keep your belongings safe.

1. Using the Wrong Packing Materials

Not having the boxes available that give you a cushion of space can lead to finding broken items at the other end of your move. Have boxes of all necessary size, quality packing tape, labels, markers, packing peanuts, newspaper, and bubble wrap. You may not need all of these items, but have the ones that’ll best protect your belongings.

2. Poor Planning and Leaving Things for the Last Minute

Your entire move will be delayed and more stressful if the movers show up and nothing is packed. Plan plenty of time to get started with the packing and have it done before moving day arrives. Pack a little at a time for the month leading up to the big move. It’s easier to work around a little disarray than feel extremely stressed when moving day arrives with nothing done.

3. Filling a Box to Excess Weight

No one wants to move boxes that weigh more than 50 pounds each. It can also lead to breaking items that are delicate or fragile by having them buried under heavy boxes. Balance out the weight and have more boxes than you need to avoid over-stuffing each one.

4. Packing Heavy Objects Over Fragile Items

The items you place in each box is an important consideration. Never put items that are heavy on top of sensitive objects like electronics. Watch out for the accidental placement of breakable dishes, home decor, or picture frames being placed under items like heavy books.

5. Packing Edible Items with Household Chemicals

Unless you have a large number of food items or household chemicals, it’s better to throw out the ones you are unable to finish or give them away before the move. You can easily replace them at the other end. If you do pack any of this for the move, make sure the chemicals are packed separate from the foods.

6. Failing to Label Boxes

Your residential moving Toronto company will be unable to unload the truck and set your belongings in their proper place without having them properly labeled. Purchase the necessary labels and markers to mark down what room the box is from and which is more urgently needed to unpack first at the other end of the move.

Keep from making some of the more common mistakes to help make your move a smoother and more pleasant experience.
